While developer sites and public API libraries are nothing new, Nationwide built a first of its kind in the insurance industry platform to enable partners and developers to digitally deliver products from across Nationwide’s breadth of protection solutions (auto, home, commercial, life, and pet), making the partner experience quick, easy, and seamless.
Nationwide understood how a digital partnership platform was critical to their strategy of meeting members where they are inside of partner ecosystems. While the company already had a thriving developer portal housing its API library, it lacked the capabilities needed to expand APIs beyond a technology integration and into a partner management platform. Nationwide created a program to build the partnership management capabilities while uplifting the developer portal experience into a true partner portal (partner.nationwide.com), including the ability to identify, track, compensate and manage partnerships. Over the course of 12 months, a team iterated across functions to embed partner identification in core quote-and-bind systems and data stores, and create discounts, marketing collateral, and compensation plans that would be available on the portal or administered by platform capabilities. This was made possible by previous investments to modernize and API enabled core systems, allowing Nationwide to innovate like a digital native company. The platform MVP1 went live 6/14/20. More than 50 partners have been enabled through platform capabilities, and investments in additional capabilities continues today.
This innovative digital partnership offering has enabled key strategic B2B and B2B2C for future success, including auto insurance quote and bind embedded into the car buying process, Insurance Verification – connecting Nationwide’s ecosystem to the mortgage ecosystem to create efficiency for lenders and end customers, and a white labelled Nationwide insurance experience enabling auto customers with required vehicle technology to share data and earn premium discounts. All of these partnerships enhance a customer's experience, embedding protection solutions such that Nationwide can protect its members and reduce the friction typically found in the insurance journey.
